Cresce nel cupo Fife , ove insistono le buie miniere di carbone scozzesi . Si laurea in Ingegneria e da subito lavora applicando i suoi studi . Ama la pittura e passa molto del suo tempo libero a guardare le opere esposte nel museo locale di Kirkcaldy.Non si iscrive a nessuna scuola di " Belle Arti " , ma nelle mani delicate e capaci possiede una grande capacità artistica . Ed ecco che nel 1988 inizia la sua carriera come pittore presso la " Royal Scottish Academy " . Le sue prime opere hanno
immediatamente successo ed in poco tempo si crea una " nicchia " tra i pittori UK . Dipinge prevalentemente giovani donne molto seducenti accompagnate da uomini maturi. Nei suoi dipinti quasi sempre emerge una caratterialità umana che interagisce con la sensualità , che a volte può apparire cupa . Si può dire di lui che è un notevole artista , con un vissuto privo d' accademia. Il suo cognome è quello della madre italiana. I suoi quadri hanno sono simili a quelli di Edward Hopper, però mentre Hopper possedeva uno stile allora moderno e raffigurava un'America freddamente moderna , le opere di Vettriano fanno percepire un passato recente , ricordato con dolcezza . Di solito i suoi soggetti, sono proprio la rievocazione del passato , che è fatto di certe cose che oggi sono scomparse o quasi : eleganza, romanticismo ed erotismo raffinato . Lui dipinge seguendo due vie .. " La donna in attesa " e " L'amore immortale " . Crea bellissimi chiaroscuri ..luci ed ombre , che affascinano qualsiasi persona che l'osserva . Attualmente risulta essere il pittore vivente più venduto e riprodotto nel mondo. Si è calcolato che abbia venduto tre milioni di poster e stampe dei suoi quadri. TACB.
