Film memorabilia can include anything that is related to cinema that a person considers valuable, whether sentimentally or financially. People have all sorts in their collections from original autographs to original film scripts. Other people may focus their collection more on original theatre posters that were used to advertise the film; it really depends on the interests of the individual. It is thought that the concept of film memorabilia began with such things as scrap-books, autographs, photographs and industry magazines and quickly expanded in the post-second World War era. Collectors would seek out original advertising material such as posters as these were relatively easy to get hold of in these days.
Nowadays, collecting film memorabilia is more than just a hobby as it has grown into an internationally recognised community of serious collectors. Today's collectors are more adventurous and ambitious and now collect movie props, costumes and production materials such as screen plays and call sheets. The collectible items of many popular films are now sold via independent, online film memorabilia stores and online auctions.
Many people collect film memorabilia as a way of reminding them of their favourite films and to feel closer to their on-screen idols. Collecting memorabilia from any field is a way of establishing yourself as a huge fan of something or someone and collecting brings pleasure to lots of people everyday. If you are looking to start up a collection then it is first essential to give your collection a theme. You can do this by deciding on what things interest you the most about the world of film. It may be a certain actor, producer, era or genre of film, anything you want really. You may just want to collect a certain form of film memorabilia such as movie posters but you shouldn't just collect all the posters you can find, instead focus on foreign films or musicals for example.
Once you have decided on your theme you must start your research as you will need to be well-informed if you are to build up an interesting collection. Chances are, if you are thinking of starting a collection then you will already have a strong interest in films so doing some research will not seem like a chore, more like a pleasure. That is another important element of collecting; you need to have a genuine interest in what you are collecting as a lot of hard work and effort needs to be put in to establish a successful collection. The more you know about the history of the items you are collecting then the better prepared you will be to make a good investment and not be ripped off.
The internet is a great place to search for film memorabilia as there are many sites that are dedicated to selling authentic memorabilia. You can also visit online auction sites to find rare and interesting pieces. You may also want to search through car-boot sales, garage sales and charity shops for potentially rare cheap pieces. When using the internet you must always be on the look out for fraudsters trying to pass of fake items as real. These people are looking to make some quick and easy money but don't be fooled. You should always look for documents that authenticate the pieces and always check out the seller's history. If they are dodgy hopefully other collectors will post a negative comment to warn others of the dangers of being ripped off.
If you are looking to start a film memorabilia collection or you want to boost your collection with another exciting item then why not visit Genuine Memorabilia's extensive catalogue. They are a family-run company who promise 100% authentic items to interest any film fanatics.
