New Zealand Censorship 1916-1990s

Approximately 10 years ago I heard through the movie poster grapevine that a huge collection of original movie posters was being sold off in New Zealand after the closure of a distributer. I had been aware that this holy grail of posters existed for some time and when they finally came up for sale I flew to New Zealand immediately and was fortunate to be able to purchase them all. The enormous and daunting task of getting them all back to Australia for sorting and cataloguing is another story that I wont go into here.

The inventory included posters from the 50s to the 90s with the majority unused. New Zealand rarely printed movie posters of their own and used American, British and Australian posters and lobby cards. Consequently, the majority had New Zealand censorhip stamps or stickers added. These labels had often been painstakingly applied to every poster and lobby card.

In many cases the US or Australian distribution and censor details were blacked out by hand along with any other imagery or text that was considered inappropriate.

Censorship of films and posters began in New Zealand around 1911 when lobby groups started to pressure the government to exercise some control over some of the risque or controversial films that had begun to appear along with some graphically lurid posters. As a result, the Cinematograph Film Censorship Act of 1916 was introduced for the censorship of films. Its amendment in 1926 allowed for the censorship of posters. The various regulations were consolidated in the Cinematograph Films Act of 1928.
In 1956 the Censorship Regulations were revised on the advice of the Film Censor, Gordon Mirams, to provide for five classes of certificate:
(G) Approved for general exhibition.
(Y) Recommended as suitable for persons aged 13 and over.
(A) Recommended as suitable for adults only (persons aged 16 and over).
(R) Screening restricted to persons over a specified age or to a specified class of audience.
(S) Recommended as suitable or unsuitable for a specified class of audience.
(R16) was introduced in the 1950s. 16 year olds were considered for practical purposes to be adults although this was not always the case in other legislation. This system was considered to be somewhat goundbreaking through its focus on parental control rather than cutting films. Despite this Mirams was more willing to cut films than his predecessors.

Censorship of movie posters was used either in the form of stamps or stickers. Whilst the stickers can generally be removed by a competant restorer, the stamps can be more difficult and are often accompanied by large blackout areas where ink has been used. Two of the best examples of original daybills that have been heavily censored are with Goldfinger and Marnie.

This system that had been introduced by Gordon Mirams lasted until 1976 when the single "A" and "S" certificates were dropped and a "Y" certificate was introduced - (Approved for general exhibition: recommended as more suitable for persons 13 years of age and over). Another change resulted in a "GA" and a "GY" classification to indicate that they were restrictions and not recommendations.

The Films, Videos and Publications Act of 1993 has produced a revised system that draws on the historical traditions of censorship with its current system of ratings and classifications. Instead of "Indecent" it now uses "Objectionable" and the current "M" (Suitable for mature audiences 16 and over) rating has replaced the older "A" or "Special A" ratings. Posters in New Zealand now use neat stickers for censorship.
The Chief Censors:
William Jolliffe 1916-1927
W.A.Tanner 1927-1937
W.A.Von Kiesenberg 1938-1949
Gordon Mirams 1949-1959
Douglas McIntosh 1960-1976
Bernard Tunnicliffe 1976-1983
Arthur Everard 1983-1990
Jane Wrightson 1991-1993
Kathryn Paterson 1993-1998
Bill Hastings 1999- present day

Censorship and the Value of posters

In the cases of Goldfinger and Marnie, the censorship with the heavily blacked out areas which severely detract from the image can significantly devalue a poster. Others that have a neat sticker are less affected particularly as most stickers can easily be removed by a restorer. The stamps can also be removed in many cases but many collectors are quite happy to retain the unique aspect of the posters history.

As part of the New Orleans Film Society's 2011 Film-O-Rama festival, which was held at the Prytania Theatre, Ed Poole gave a presentation on film accessories (posters, one-sheets, lobby cards, etc.) and their conservation. He also offered a brief history of filmmaking in Louisiana and displayed some vintage posters of Louisiana films.

Die hard lovers of the cinema are known to collect framed movie posters as celebrity collectibles. This is very true of collectors who collect items related to a specific actor or actress. For instance, if a collector only collects items related to the actor Johnny Depp, they will no doubt want to acquire posters from all the films in which this actor appeared. They will then frame these posters and place them on the walls of their celebrity collectibles viewing room.

When adding framed movie posters to your celebrity collection you will first want to start by making a list of all the films in which the actor or actress has taken part; or you will want to make a list of the films that they appeared in that you wish to acquire posters of. However, avid and seasoned collectors will seek out posters from every movie in which their celebrity appeared in whether they liked the movie or not. They do this in order to capture and document and the entire life and career of the celebrity they collect items of.

Once they have a list of all the movies which they hope to acquire posters of they will then need to figure out what type of posters they wish to add to their collection. Do they only want first print posters that were sent to the theaters when the movie opened? Or are they fine with replicas of the original movie poster.

According to who the actor is and what movie you are seeking a poster of, you may not always be able to acquire an original poster. Many movie studios require that theaters return the posters after the film leaves their theater. However, there are many movie theaters that have no problem in giving away their posters after a movie has had its run. You simply will need to ask the manager of the location to see what their specific theater does with the posters.

If a film is very old it may be nearly impossible for you to obtain a first print poster. This is in regards from older films such as the likes of "Gone With The Wind," "Platoon," "Patton", and older film posters that they may not have been reprinted during our modern day.

However, the majority of movie poster can be found as replications. Many poster companies that can be found exclusively on the Internet specialize in hard to find replications of original posters. They generally carry a huge stock of movie related posters, however, if they don't have what you are looking for you can generally contact the company via email and ask them if they can inquire the poster from their various sources.

Most collectors will also frame the poster in order to protect the poster from being ripped or getting crumpled. They will also do this in order to protect it from water or other elements that may cause the poster damage.

Above all, be sure to protect any and all posters that are part of your collection in order to maintain their worth and appeal.

Movie Poster and its Histroy in India

Film Posters are printed or made for the purpose of marketing the Movie that is set to release or has been released in the local theatres or cinema halls. There can be large variety of sizes a Movie Poster since it sole intent is to meet up with the advertising needs of the Film Producers or Distributors. There have been several versions of movie posters in regards to the content, film, scenes, country and size of the Poster. It usually contains Pictures or Images along with text such as Title of the film, tag line, names of the producers and other familiar cast and crew of the film that is considered to attract the audiences into watching the film. With time Posters have advanced from a Hand Painted to digitally created Banner that is printed in large volumes using digital printers in the desired sizes and colours

In India movie posters are displayed inside and outside of the Movie theatre, Cinema Hall, Multiplexes and also on streets and shops with the sole intent to attract audiences for the Movie. It has always been seen that the same style of Image is used in the distributor's Press book, Newspaper Press Releases, DVD covers, VHS covers and website of the film.

Use of Posters in Film promotion has been since a long time as these where initially used as placards to be displayed outside the theatre to announce the onlookers about the timing and schedules of the films running inside the theatre.  By the year 1900 the industry began to print images of scenes from the film which where a series of images depicting the array of images from the film as a preview to the prospective audiences.

Originally Film Posters where printed for the sole use of Theatre owner displaying them in their galleries as a means to let the audiences know about the schedule of the films. In the United States they were usually returned after the particular movie's run was stopped as the paper of each poster was recycled by National Screen service so they could re-produce it in an eco-friendly manner. The NSS had a nationwide operation. It was during these times they were not thrown away and thus went into the hands of avid poster collectors which gave birth to a very famous hobby and enthusiasm to collect them. The fact that some collectors did keep them safe from being spoilt and fading, gave a trend where everyone saw a rise in the value and demand with passage of time and thus this craze always grew rather than declining.

During 1980's the American Film Studio began to undertake printing of Posters, its distribution all In-house made them overtake the job from NSS and thereby made it widely spread industry. There is an Annual key Award that is sponsored by The Hollywood Reporter which also has an Award for the best movie posters, under several genre of films such as Horror, Comedy, Drama, Action, Romance and adventure film posters. They also recognize the key art as a very important means to help distributors promote a film and thus attribute to its success. The Silence of Lamb Film poster was declared the best poster in India for the past Thirty years.
